DELIGHTFUL EXPERIENCES RESEARCH

 

The Origins
In 2016 we started an investigation on and around Delight to understand how a Delightful Moment can bring a positive break in the everyday life routine. From that initial research question, our interest has broadened to comprehend the universal value of Delight, and its potential in determining the quality of everyday experiences.

The Approach
Following a Design Research approach, we apply an iterative process based on Research [understanding], Ideation [mapping and exploring opportunities] and Prototyping [Proof of concepts].
The output is theoretical and experimental insights, conceptual models, applications, as well as design methods and tools.

Insights and Research Strategy
What emerged from the insights and experimentations is that we need to look at the broader perspective and consider the overall experience to understand a single moment.
Delight is a complex subject, not easy to classify; however, like any complex theme, we can reduce it to its essential dimensions.

 

Our current strategy is to focus on the four D’s:
DEFINE, DECODE, DESCRIBE and DESIGN.

DEFINE
What is delight? How do we feel delighted?
What are the building blocks of a Delightful Experience and their mutual interactions?
Output: Delight Framework Model

DECODE
What personal and cultural factors influence achieving a state of delight?
Output: Value Map and Communitas Profile

DESCRIBE
How can we represent and visualize the emotional and sensory dynamics that constitute the building blocks of a delightful experience?
Output: Delight Experience Dashboard and Score

DESIGN
And even more ambitiously, how can we design delightful products, services and experiences from a humanistic and universal perspective?
Output: Emotion Wheel and Sensorial Palette Tools

What’s next
To move from creating knowledge around Delight to the idea of sharing a vision around Delight, where the content and tools that we have created become the critical assets for creating, involving and engaging a community of interest around Delight in a long term perspective.
